what i got from our class about service and activism was that they are two different things but are both done for the same reasons. in a sense they are kind of the same but activism is a little bigger than service. i kind of look it as service being to go and learn something then helping. and activism takes more effort because its not only trying to help change something but you do more to promote the cause. being and activist for a cause you can do a lot to really help, you can do things like write letters, send emails, or having boycots, marches and strikes to really get your point across. service is kind of smaller and i see it as like not something that a person really does everyday of their lives like activists do.

I just read the village voice and i am very amazed on how Rajeev Goyal was very dedicated to the Peace Corps. The Peace Corps is an organization that helps gather things for the less fortunate around the world with everyday things such as food, clean water, and clothes. Some of the people that i was surprised to hear about that help out in the Peace Corp are Jay-z and Beyonce! I think its cool to see or hear about famous people taking the time out in their busy schedules to do good things for the community or other things such as the Peace Corp. It just shows a different side of that person. At first i use to think it was just the army that did those kind of things, but no pretty much anybody can volunteer to help out places that need it. Another thing that i liked about this story is how Rajeev’s parents wanted him to become a doctor but instead he did what makes him happy, something he did for his benefit and not for his parents’ benefit. Last thing that i liked was how Rajeev raised money by having dinners with his doctor friends and family and with that money he raised he was able to get clean water for the Peace Corp. I think Rajeev is doing his best to make a change to the world and am very pleased with his success thus far.

After reading, “what it means when a crowd in a faraway nation takes a soldier representing your own nation, shoots him, drags him from his vehicle and then mutilates him in the dust” I understood it as a man at home who seems to me like is going through Post- Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). PTSD is a mental health condition that is triggered by a terrifying event. Some of the symptoms of PTSD are nightmares, flashbacks and severe anxiety, and also thoughts about the event that are uncontrollable. Although the author never says that the man at home is or was ever a soldier it seems like he was to the reader. At first it might not seem like it to the reader because it just says that the man felt anxiety and very unease and also how he would just pace around the house at times for no apparent reason. He then notices a picture of soldier’s body under a truck in a faraway nation in that day’s newspaper. After that it just puts the man in an ever deeper depression mode. And that’s where it made me think, was the guy at home a soldier? Maybe he was. And maybe he was at home for a while doing time off the army? That could have been a good reason why he was feeling that way at the beginning of this article. And once he seen the picture of the dead soldier it scared him even more because maybe he knew the dead soldier or maybe he was scared for his life because he was going to be deployed again soon.

Before reading, I believe that ecological literacy means the things that we do here on our planet to make it a better place for not only ourselves but everyone around us. One way to become better ecologically literate is to simply help out around your own community. some of the easiest ways everyone can help is by recycling everyday and also by picking up trash outside or at the park. Little things like taking an hour a week to help out at community parks or recreational centers can be more than what someone else is doing. In a lot of neighborhoods we are provided with recycling bins to separate it form the trash, doing this everyday helps to be more organized. In our everyday life we can recycle plenty of things so why not actually separating to make things a little easier. Becoming aware of our surroundings and aware of what’s going on in our communities is another way one can become ecologically literate. After reading, i learned that being ecologically literate means understanding the sources of organization of ecological communities and using those sources to create a more workable human community. I believe i am ecologically literate because i try and recycle as much as i can everyday, it might be something small but its also one more thing than someone else might be doing. For me its the one way i can help out in my community.

I think that the grading contract is fair. As long as everyone puts in their own effort there should be no problem.
