When You Can See Your Final Grades

I will have final grade information posted to the Splatter “Check My Grade” area by 6pm Friday, May 18. This is a few hours later that I originally said, but patience is a virtue, eh? The portfolios themselves will be available before then by noon–in D108–if you’d like to pick them up, but the grade info won’t be available until the early evening. Thanks again for a great semester.

    RJE 13 Cancelled

A number of you expressed that if you did not have to compelte RJE13 this week, you could focus your attention better on preparing for the ACT OUT event–your display, your words, and your mind. So be it. I’ll cancel this weeks RJE. If you already completed it, you can apply it toward next week. Make sure that our event is amazing, by being completely prepared.

if we have already completed the RJE can we just leave it on Splatter, or do we have to RE-submit it?

    RELOCATING CLASS TUESDAY
    for the Invisible Children Event

    NOTE:
There is a last minute location change to this event. See location information below!

An opportunity has presented itself to our class, and I’d like us all to take advantage of it. On Tuesday this week (4/3) Invisible Children will be presenting at Moraine. The topic of Kony and child soldiers has come up a couple times in our class recently, so I think this is an opportune moment to learn more about this ongoing social justice and human rights issue. Let’s seize the moment and relocate our class Tuesday so we can attend this event. Here are the details…

    Event: Invisible Children Presentation
    Date/Time: Tuesday 4/3 at 11:00am and 12:30pm
    Location: Building F, Menker Theater

I have reserved space for both the 11:00 and 12:30 classes. Please plan to go straight to the theater to attend this event instead of our regular class location. This will certainly be a worthwhile diversion; we’ll talk about it some when we meet again in class on Thursday. Thanks.

For my Monday/Wednesday class, of course you are welcome to attend too if you are available and would like to.

    Best,

    Prof McGuire

    FYI: RJE Requirement Clarification

Some (a very small set) of you continue to be confused about the basic requirements for the weekly RJE posts. As stated in multiple places throughout the syllabus, schedule, and sidebar of this Splatter site, and explained and announced numerous times in class, every RJE must be in response to a a source–a text of some kind–and that source must be cited using MLA. This has been overtly clear from the beginning.

I have today added clarifying language to term 3 of the contract. Term three now reads as follows:

Splatter Contribution—Publish at least one substantial “Reading/Research Journal” post (250 words) to the Splatter conversation site each and every week as assigned. (These “Reading/Research Journal” posts should be focused on your reading for the course, meaning each post must cite a source with proper MLA, and do not include other postings you will make to Splatter, i.e. open conversation, work for review, peer review essays, and so on.)

The additional words added are the following: “meaning each post must cite a source with proper MLA.”

Make no mistake about it. This is and has been a requirement for the RJE assignments since day one. Pay attention, everyone. Thanks.

    Hunger 101

As you know, a bunch of us are going to the Greater Chicago Food Depository this Thursday. If you are going, or even if you are not, I’d like you to take a look at a couple of things that might be eye-opening. Check out the following…

I hope this information helps prepare you a little for this service experience.

    Week 7 Updates

This is a busy week with many things happening. So there’s no confusion, I wanted to post/send this reminder. Here’s what the week looks like.

    • Monday/Wednesday (051) meets as usual. We’ll be doing “elevator speeches.”
    • No Classes on Tuesday due to Staff Development Day
    • Thursday 11am (033) meets as usual, but we will end class about 15 minutes early so those going on the GCFD field trip can get there on time.
    • Thursday 12:30 (040) will not meet because the GCFD fieldtrip will occur during class time.
    • If you are attending the GCFD field trip and are participating in our carpool, meet in D233 at 11:55am on Thursday. If you are attending but not carpooling, you can meet at the GCFD at 1:00. Please don’t be late! Also, dress appropriately with closed-toe shoes, long pants, and so forth for light warehouse work. Details on this field trip are here → GCFD Field Trip
    • Everyone, if you can, bring a box of cereal! The Food Depository is in particular need of dry cereal (boxed or bagged). Even if you’re not going on the trip, if you are able to, please bring a box of cereal (or any dried/canned food item to donate).
    • Tuesday/Thursday classes have two things due on Splatter Thursday (3/1): Peer Review 2 and RJE6. (All due dates are on the schedule.)
    • Project 3: A Letter to the Editor is available under “Writing Prompts” in the sidebar on Splatter. A draft is due at the start of Week 8–Monday for section 051 and Tuesday for sections 033/041. Refer to the schedule for all due dates.

I think that’s it. Let me know if you have any questions, and let’s have a great week!

Seeing this video helps prove that the internet is not only for negativity. I enjoyed seeing this video and plan to post it to some of my friends. Thanks Professor.

    Our Second Service Opportunity

I have just posted information about our second action/service learning opportunity that I have arranged for us this semester, and I have recently sent around a sign-up sheet in class. I understand not everyone will be able to attend this event, but if you can, please do. It’s going to be a good one. If you can’t make this outing, I will be arranging a couple others, or you can find/create a service learning opportunity of your own. We all need to have completed at least one such outing by the end of week 8 this semester, as you will be writing about it.

I need an RSVP on this by no later than noon this Wednesday, February 8.

Follow this link for all the details → Service Opportunity #2.

If you are interested, follow the instructions to sign-up right away please (if you haven’t already signed-up in class), so I can provide the organization with an accurate head count. I just learned that they need to know how many are coming by no later than Wednesday, February 8. I know it’s short notice, but please check your schedules right away and let me know if you can attend. Thank you. Let me know if you have any questions.

News Some of You Brought to Me

As you know, one of our upcoming service-learning opportunities will bring many of us to Share Your Soles an inspiring organization started singled-handedly by a woman named Mona Purdy. When I was mentioning this in class today, some of you informed that Mona was recently on the news–with unfortunate circumstances. Having just returned from a trip to Mexico where she delivered 3000 pairs of shoes to those in need, she arrived home to find that her modest apartment had been destroyed in an electrical fire: she lost everything.

See this news clip for more information: Tables Turn for Charity’s Founder.

I just thought you might be interested in this. For those of you who are going on our Share Your Soles service-learning outing, you will probably meet Mona. She strikes me as an amazing person.

Print, Fill-out/Sign, and Bring to Next Class Please

Hi, all. As you all know, at some point or another in the course of this semester, you will be taking a service-learning “field trip” for this class. To participate in this, the college requires that you complete and sign a liability waiver. It’s a simple form used on campus that is required for all students participating in field trips, but it’s really important that the college has these on file BEFORE the trip occurs. If you can please print, fill-out/sign, and bring the form to our next class meeting, it would really help. This one form should cover you for any and all excursions we take this semester. If you can’t print it, no worries, I will bring extra copies to our next class meeting, but doing this now will save us a lot of time. Thanks so much. Click the link below to open the document for printing. (It’s a PDF file.) Thanks again.

    Class Cancelled Thursday 1/19

I wish the semester didn’t have to start off this way, but unfortunately, I will be unable to make our class meeting today. I have a family emergency that I must attend to. I may send another message out to you all a bit later, so keep an eye out here (and in your e-mail). I’ll see you next week. Thanks for your understanding.

The only things that I have questions on are the peer review commentary and the splatter contribution.

For the peer review commentary, that’s a peer review of no less than 500 words for the 3 classmates’ for each paper?

And for the splatter contribution, can examples of our reading be given?

      Thanks,

      Kyle

      • Susan Bayaa 7:43 pm on January 17, 2012 Permalink | Log in to Reply

I also wanted to know a little more about that too. I didn’t really understand it completely.

      • Prof McGuire 10:26 pm on January 17, 2012 Permalink | Log in to Reply

During our peer review weeks (following each major paper), you will be asked to write three peer reviews at 500 words each–for a total of 1500 words that week. The idea is to develop your response for each of three peers you will be grouped with to the length a brief essay. This kind of feedback can be really helpful if one does it well.

1500 words is about the length asked for in the major writing assignments, but people often find the peer review to be easier because you are starting over three times versus sustaining a single thread of thought over the entire 1500 word composition.

Peer review is a skill we will work on in this class. It’s not that bad. Trust me.

We can talk more about it in class, too.

The grading contract seems fair and simple to follow. It should not be a challenge to get a “B” grade for the class.

    • CoreyGallai 5:04 pm on January 17, 2012 Permalink | Log in to Reply

Seems totally fair. I took COM 101 w/ Prof. M. I was able to get a B in the class

    • Susan Bayaa 7:45 pm on January 17, 2012 Permalink | Log in to Reply

It seems fair enough, not complaining. I still want to try to get an A.

    • Armando Cortez 7:50 pm on January 17, 2012 Permalink | Log in to Reply

The grading contract I think is fair. It offers everyone the chance to succeed in class just by doing your best.

    • Dawn Murry 11:34 pm on January 17, 2012 Permalink | Log in to Reply

I think the grading contract is very exciting and motiving to my classmates and myself. It gives us a fair chance to obtain a good grade with hard work and effort. Great job Professor McGuire.

    • EMurphy 11:54 am on January 18, 2012 Permalink | Log in to Reply

I look forward to strengthening and improving my writing through this class. The contract is fair in terms of what is expected of each student.

    • glaurenzana 12:53 pm on January 18, 2012 Permalink | Log in to Reply

I think that the grading contract is flawless. The requirements to earn a “B” in the is course don’t seem that difficult, so there is really no excuse to not to wall!

    • MShrader 10:36 pm on January 18, 2012 Permalink | Log in to Reply

The contract appears to be quite reasonable. I think that you’ve assembled some good guidelines for us to follow.

    • Killian Noonan 32 10:21 am on January 19, 2012 Permalink | Log in to Reply

I thought it was reasonable. As long as we all do our part, everyone has the exact same opportunity for success. However, you will have to further elaborate on the posts in Splatter in regards to the contribution. Other than that I have no other thoughts.

    • braggm2 1:15 pm on January 22, 2012 Permalink | Log in to Reply

The grading contract seems easy to follow. The requirements aren’t that difficult and it says exactly what needs to be done to earn the grade you want.
