For this weeks reading journal entry I decided on touching base again with the recent news on Syria. The UN finally took it into consideration to help the people of syria and protect them from the on going man slaughter of their president Bashar Alassad. The UN Security Council has urged Syria to carry out a plan called”urgently and visibly” that states the syrian military has to ceasefire by 10 April. It calls on Damascus the capital city of syria to pull back its troops and heavy weapons from city centres by that date, and for all parties including the opposition to cease armed violence within 48 hours of this pull-back. The UN expects a full truce by 12 April. Hopefully by then this madness would stop,so far more then 9,000 lives have been taken by this slaughter. No more innocent people should die for someone that calls himself a ruler.

My journal entree for this week was about a hate crime that happened in California.A mother from Iraq who was beaten in her home in California that was left with a threatening note died on Saturday. I think its ridiculous how people of this country still commit murder to innocent people just for who they are. The lady was 32 years old with 5 children, a pretty nice life gone to waist with so many responsibilities left over. The media still makes it seem that people from Iraq are dangerous and animals, but in real there just like everybody else HUMAN! The media changed the way people think of people and I think its time to change all this hatred and live like normal beings before its to late for another innocent family faces the same faith.

Your topic is interesting, I noticed it when I was posing my journal entry, but not to be rude it’s spelled journal “entry” not entree.

“The Cycle of Socialization” by Bobbie Harro talks about how we are born to different culture that we have no control over. I think this article is a good thing to read since everybody all over the world is being criticized for who they are and were they come from. This difference of who we are has caused many wars throughout the years simply because people just don’t understand other people. We try to get close to something we don’t know and it causes hatred and fury. As humans we have to except everybody for who they are but it doesn’t mean that because who we are we have to turn into savages towards one another. We are human beings and were still new to biased behavior and we have to learn harder to except everybody for who they are, otherwise we won’t evolve.

    Feed my Starving Children

This was one of my first charity organizations I ever been to. At first I thought that we were going to this fund raiser to meet many children that need help and offer them support and talk to them for a couple of hours, but I was wrong. Feed my starving children is an organization founded to make a special kind of meal, box it, and then shipped to 70 countries including Haiti, Sudan, Jamaica, Bolivia, Dominican Republic, Tanzania, Lesotho, Liberia, Ghana, Guatemala, Malawi, Cambodia, East Timor, Nicaragua, Sri Lanka, India, Indonesia, Cameroon, Niger, Colombia, and El Salvador, and to Hurricane Katrina victims in Louisiana, Mississippi and many more (http://www.fmsc.org/page.aspx?pid=278#A6). And was by a Christian nonprofit in 1987 through the efforts of a Minnesota businessman who felt called by God to help feed the starving children of the world during a humanitarian visit to Honduras. He returned to the Twin Cities (Minnesota) to develop a method of large-scale relief. (http://www.fmsc.org/page.aspx?pid=264)

Nearly every day, thousands of Feed My Starving Children volunteers are producing meals to fight world hunger. We basically started by watching this video that explained what feed my starving children is and what they do. This organization is like a factory that makes their own packages of food and ships them out to all the countries in need. They purchase all of the raw ingredients like soy, rice, vegetables, and the vitamin and mineral vegetarian chicken flavoring mix. The vitamins included in these ingredients are Vitamin B12,Vitamin C,Zinc,Vitamin D,Fats,Magnesium,Iron,Vitamin A,Calcium,Protein,Carbohydrates.
Then they measure all of these certain ingredients together to make a filling meal for one starving child all in one small package. It’s very surprising on how such simple ingredients can make a huge difference towards somebody’s life. We were shown a video of a little kid name Omar which was in critical condition, that was flown over from of the countries that fmsc sends its food to and was put to a test. Omar is 8 years old and weighted around 20 ponds only bones and no hair, one of the saddest pictures you will ever see. He was fed the same type of food that fmsc children donate to different countries. In just 8 months Omar was 70 pounds, blooming face, more energetic than ever and with a full set of hair all thanks to the people at fmsc for saving another life day after day after day.

50 dollars of your donation can feed one child for a whole year! That is amazing. 93% of the total donations go directly to the food program. 7% goes to fundraising, administration, and overhead combined. Each meal costs them only 22 cents to produce. Most of their support comes from individuals, followed by churches, foundations, and corporations. In 2011, fmsc provided 127.5 million meals to nearly 70 countries around the world. Nearly 4,000 FMSC meals are provided to kids under 6 each day, and 160 meals are given to pregnant and lactating women. In 2003 FMSC produced 3 million meals with one packing site and 17,000 volunteers. By 2011 FMSC produced over 133 million meals with 6 permanent packing sites, and a nationwide Mobile Pack program, and more than 565,000 volunteers. The locations of FMSC are Chanhassen, MN, Coon Rapids, MN, Eagan, MN, Aurora, IL, Schaumburg, IL, and Tempe, AZ. (http://www.fmsc.org/page.aspx?pid=453). Feed My Starving Children targets feeding programs to children who are in the most severe circumstances, those suffering from severe malnutrition and threatened with death from starvation. The United States does not have that level of hunger on a widespread basis. In the past they have supplied food to an Indian reservation in South Dakota and to those affected by Hurricane Katrina. ( http://www.fmsc.org/page.aspx?pid=278#A1).

After told what this organization is and what they do, we got to work. We were put in groups to pack all the food they had ready for us. Each person was assigned a task which included measuring the ingredients and putting them into a package by order. First came the rice, then the chicken, then the vegetables, then the soy. After that was done the package was sealed, put in a box, and ready to be shipped. This organization is very organized and clean with no hazard to anybody’s health. You can choose to volunteer packing the food or load up the boxes. We had 16 volunteers, and in just under two hours we managed to pack 32 boxes and around 8,000 meals. Now that is amazing for only two hours. Imagine how many meals they get threw in just one week. When time was up we cleaned the area we were packing in which only took 15min and we were congratulated on the work we did, offered our donations and left. This is something I think everybody should do and witness, it brings pride to yourself knowing one person can make a huge difference. We don’t realize how many people out there are dying out of starvation but I think it’s time for us to do something about it. If you’re interested in FMSC you can go to their website feed my starving children.org to find out more information and register to volunteer if you or anybody you know is interested.

First off, I’m going to congratulate you because community service is so hard for me to do. It’s literally like pulling teeth with me. I hate it. I wish I had the time to go to Feed My Starving Children. It sounded like a legit organization that I wanted to help out at. I thought it was cool that people could race against each other to see who can get boxes packed quicker or who could do the most in a certain amount of time. I liked that it actually went to countries that needed help and all the money and proceeds went directly to children. I liked that Feed My Starving Children would pack a whole meal box for a child for one whole year. Its surprises me that these boxes go to so many countries when I thought they just went to Africa. “The United States does not have that level of hunger on a widespread basis. In the past they have supplied food to an Indian reservation in South Dakota and to those affected by Hurricane Katrina.” I was especially surprised to see that the boxes even went to people in the United States. So many charities are focused on people of other countries. It’s cool to see that this one helps out those close to us as well.

That’s a beautiful story about Omar. It shows really what Feed My Starving Children can do to help those in need. It’s sad to think that a 10 year old is 20 pounds. Thank God that Feed My Starving Children was there to help him to give him the nutrients that he needed. Hopefully he will go on to become a successful person.

“That is amazing. 93% of the total donations go directly to the food program. 7% goes to fundraising, administration, and overhead combined. Each meal costs them only 22 cents to produce.” It’s absolutely amazing that all of their money goes directly towards their cause. I don’t like to hear about 33% of charity money going towards causes… it’s interesting to think that it only takes 22 cents to produce one meal. That makes it that much easier to donate because I know a lot of people are concerned with how much money that they have to donate. 22 cents isn’t that much at all. “This organization is very organized and clean with no hazard to anybody’s health.” That’s good to hear. There’s nothing worse than a dirty, shady charity organization. Taha.

“This is something I think everybody should do and witness, it brings pride to you knowing one person can make a huge difference. We don’t realize how many people out there are dying out of starvation but I think it’s time for us to do something about it.” I agree with you. I think helping people does bring out pride in oneself.

I still like your writing but your grammar, spelling, and in text citations still need work. You cannot put the website as an in text citation and you need to put them in whenever you have information that is not your own writing. What did this experience help you learn about yourself?

I can relate to you in many ways. Doing a charity event for this class was also new to me. I had never got involved in any real charity before and it was very different. When I first heard that we all had to pick which charity we wanted to get involved in and I thought it was going to be very boring. Like, “Why is our teacher making us do this!” and I just wanted to get it over with. We all tried it out and it wasn’t what we expected. It is like the phrase, “Don’t knock it, till you try it.” “Feed my starving children is an organization founded to make a special kind of meal, box it, and then shipped to 70 countries including Haiti, Sudan, Jamaica, Bolivia, Dominican Republic, Tanzania, Lesotho, Liberia, Ghana, Guatemala, Malawi, Cambodia, East Timor, Nicaragua, Sri Lanka, India, Indonesia, Cameroon, Niger, Colombia, and El Salvador, and to Hurricane Katrina victims in Louisiana, Mississippi and many more.” that is amazing to see that this organization helps so many people from all over the world. That something that we can do, can help millions of people all walks of life. “This organization is like a factory that makes their own packages of food and ships them out to all the countries in need. They purchase all of the raw ingredients like soy, rice, vegetables, and the vitamin and mineral vegetarian chicken flavoring mix. The vitamins included in these ingredients are Vitamin B12,Vitamin C,Zinc,Vitamin D,Fats,Magnesium,Iron,Vitamin A,Calcium,Protein,Carbohydrates.” I love the fact that they actually care what is being digested and they make sure that it is healthy. Correlating all those different types of healthy vitamins is great because we all really need it. Can you imagine how this child feels beings handed a package just for them that they do not have to share with a bunch of different people. They know that the dissatisfying feeling in their tummy will go away and they will not feel that pain of hunger anymore for the rest of the day. “Omar is 8 years old and weighted around 20 ponds only bones and no hair, one of the saddest pictures you will ever see. He was fed the same type of food that fmsc children donate to different countries. In just 8 months Omar was 70 pounds, blooming face, more energetic than ever and with a full set of hair all thanks to the people at fmsc for saving another life day after day after day.” That is crazy to believe someone so young that should be enjoying their innocent lives have to worry about where their next meal will come from. That is very sad thing to experience. “50 dollars of your donation can feed one child for a whole year!” Wow, I really did not know it was that cheap just to feed one child. I spend that much in a week to feed me. Shows we take those things for granted. I really like your paper and you did a good job explaining your experience.

I didn’t go to a place like that before so hearing about it really go me interested into going to one like it. I always try to find ways to help people out but this is really doing something for someone, or should I saw for people. This is not just helping one person out it is helping a lot of people who need that help more than anything. People that help those people out really are good hearted people. No one realizes how hard those people have it. We always take advantage of what we have. There are people who do not really have much to eat but yet we are throwing out a lot of food every day. Especially in food places there is so much that is being thrown out that a lot of people can use. It is very sad that people do not have the foods they need. I like the idea that 50 dollars can feed a child for a year but I always think about the others ones too. Maybe it is just me but I always can’t help but wonder if it really does help. Another thing is I do not think that they would really give one child food for the whole year without feeding the other children. I also do believe that there are some people that do help and that there should be more people that get involved with this activity because it would make a huge difference. It helps children get food that they need. I am happy to hear that their are foundations and churches that are also helping out in this situation and I do believe that this assignment did help a lot of people get into this “helping mood” I would say. I believe if a person does not experience or see things that need to be helped with they will not really understand how much it is needed. I know we all heard about things and children that needed food and needed help but all we did was feel sorry and not really take action. I do beleiev this push is what some people really needed to really understand how those children are and how a little effort and help can make a huge difference. I am very interested into going to an organization like this when I am able to have time and I would also like to tell peope about it because it really does make a difference. I know a lot of studnets did this only because it was an assignment but I truely believe that it did make them think differently about some things and maybe one day they will go again and might bring some friends with them too. I read that there were only 16 volunteers and within 2 hours they had 32 boxes done. That is 8,000 meals. I thought that was amazing and would really help. All I can think about is if there were people how many meals would there have been.

It was nice to actually meet you in class the other day, and not just read your papers or articles all semester long. I remember us talking in class about what you guys did for feed my starving children, and to be honest I wish I could have gone to this one just the time frame did not work out. Now packing 8000 boxes with the amount of people you had is quite simply amazing. The only sad part is that not everyone participates daily, and that was just a one day achievement. I think if feed my starving children had more people on a consistent basis then they could actually produce so much more output. I like the idea of how they showed you the vide though, and for some people it helps to get them motivated before they go and do the work. IT seems like an excellent organization to work for, and I am contemplating wheter or not to go there for our second service learning assignment. If you have any details or anything you could share with me let me know because i would really appreciate it. Also, i noticed how you are doubtful sometimes of how when we give money to organizations that if it really helps the child. I don’t blame you at all because their are so many scams today even with the non profit organizations that we just don’t know who to trust anymore. Thats why i think doing things like these are a much better way to do community service because you are doing work to help these children, instead of just giving them fifty dollars and calling it a day.

I been following the resent activity on the revelation in Syria and its been looking very bad. The president Bashar al-assad is till on his vicious rampage towards his people. Syria was expelled from the Arab League after it agreed to a peace plan only to step up attacks on protesters. In November, the league applied wide ranging sanctions. In December 2011 and late January 2012, Syria agreed to allow league observers into the country. But their presence did nothing to slow the violenceIn early March 2012, Gen. Martin E. Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told the Senate that President Obama had asked the Pentagon for military options on Syria. But both General Dempsey and Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta said the administration still believed that diplomatic and economic pressure was the best solution for protecting Syrians from the Assad regime. I think the only way to stop Bashar is if the United States gets evolved and controls the situation before more people are brutally murdered.

remember the us media is a bit biased and there is an ethnic/sectarian aspect to the civil war (i.e. alevi assad and his family and alevi dominance of syrian military) compared to non-alevi sunni muslims in Syria.

Yea your right, but this is more then religion or helping the people of syria, nobody is trying to do anything to dis obey Assad just because his resource in his country is really strong and Russia is actually standing with Syria and Iran.

    Dear Editor

I have recently been reading your newspaper and have come to a conclusion that your newspaper has not been giving much details about the civil war that have been going on in the middle east. The most resent development is concerning the civil war that Syria has been involved in. There president has been killing from 50 to 300 people on a daily basis in order to protect himself from being brought down as a ruthless president. This is murder no matter who is doing the killing and I thing the united nation should get involved in bringing this terror down. This topic concerns all American because Syria is one of the places that the United States gets its patrol and gas from, this is why we have been confronted with a massive gas price jump. I think that all people deserve to know the truth and more details because it is effecting our pockets in secrecy. Also the killing of those innocent people is forbidden and wrong, but why hasn’t the powers of the united nation done anything so far to prevent such horror? People in America know theres a war going on in the middle east but they do not know exact details of why this is happening. Your newspaper should put more in details about this civil war and how it is effecting us Americans as we speak.

    Sincerely
    Rami Ali

      Rami, what’s up? :D
I like that your letter to the editor actually seemed like you were writing to a newspaper. A lot of other ones aren’t like that. I like that you picked something that was close to your topic.
Sadly, a lot of reasons why things like other wars don’t make it to our newspapers are because people lose interest. Remember Kony 2012? That came out just two weeks ago and people have already forgotten about it. They only thing they now know is that it’s a scam and everyone wants their money back. Oh yea, and the creator of the movie, Jason Russell, was caught masturbating in public over the weekend. Go Kony.
“This topic concerns all American because Syria is one of the places that the United States gets its petroleum and gas from. This is why we have been confronted with a massive gas price jump.” It’s fantastic that you brought this to the surface because many young Americans don’t know why they now have to pay $4.30 for a gallon of gas. Remember when I told you that would happen by the summer? Hopefully it won’t go any higher because I’m sick of putting $60 in my gas tank every time I need gas. Hopefully this is a catalyst to get the world going on finding green energy. I know they have the electric cars but that’s also a problem in itself. Hopefully something soon will pop up and we won’t need gas anymore. What are we going to do when it all runs out?

“Also the killing of those innocent people is forbidden and wrong but why hasn’t the powers of the United Nations done anything so far to prevent such horror? People in America know there’s a war going on in the Middle East but they do not know exact details of why this is happening. Your newspaper should put more in details about this civil war and how it is affecting us Americans as we speak.” It’s so sad that that is happening. It makes me sick that people even have to live their lives not knowing if they’re going to come home to their families at night. If that happened in America, it would be stopped immediately. I agree that Americans should know about what’s going on in the world but I think people are sick of hearing about war. I know I am. I know it’s great we’re being protected and all but it’d be nice if we all just lived in peace, ya know? Ha-ha if only that could happen.

Did you find any organizations on how we can help the Middle East? Is there any way we can stop the Syrian President without actual military forces? Did you go back and fix your last writing? I think you have a great topic but it needs to be tweaked. Where did you send your letter to the editor in? Do you have family affected by what’s going on? I really hope you don’t because that would be terrible news.

      • Rami Ali 2:20 pm on March 19, 2012 Permalink | Log in to Reply

Hey Shannon, I appreciate your concern about my topic. I have not rewritten my paper yet or submitted my letter but hopefully soon. Thank you for your concern about my family but there all in chicago. I was born and raised here but originally I’m from Palestine aka Israel lol. The American media is not showing this but the only reason no strong country is trying to face of with Assad or Syria is because Russia, china, and Iran are all allies with syria. If the US gets involved with syrias problems then they would have to face Russia and China which i doubt will happen. The USA is in no state to go to war with the two biggest countries in the world. And on top of that you already know about the rummers that Iran has a secret nuclear strategy to defend itself and there allies,so were stuck in a problem there. There is no organization out there that is willing to step up and try helping the countries in the middle east, its just a huge war zone down there. The only thing we can do is prey for the innocent people that are being murdered everyday for trying to speak and save there country!

I have not really been watching the news lately; well I have not watched it for a long time because I don’t like seeing bad things happen. I didn’t realize it was becoming this bad in Syria. I do agree with you that the United Nation should really get involved. I don’t like when I hear people getting killed but that is really wrong. The president of Syria has been killing 50 to 300 people just so he can stay president. I think he shouldn’t be doing that. I don’t know why people always try to get so much power when they have it then they would do anything to try to keep it. This should not be allowed. I know the agreement was that this is not allowed and it should not be going on but right now I guess it is and something should be done about it. I don’t like wars and fights but I also don’t like when people are getting killed over power. I really hope it does not get any worse but it does have to get better. People really need to know little more detail about it. There is not a lot of information given so there is not a lot I can say but that it really is something bad and should really have something done about it. I can’t believe that people can become like that. I don’t understand how people want so much power that they believe they are allowed to kill people. I don’t care how much power a person has they are not allowed to kill an innocent person. It was not even just one person this president has been killing 50 to 300. That is a lot of people. There really should be more information and more detail about what is going on in Syria. All I really understand is that the president of Syria wants to keep his position and by wanting to keep his position he is killing 50 to 300 people. I don’t know if the United Nation has yet done anything yet about it but if they have not they really need to do something about it. I understood that Syria made the peace contract and they were not supposed to break it. Since Syria or the president broke it weren’t the United Nation supposed to step in and do something about it. They should not let them get away with it and they should be doing something about it. Why they have not yet is something have no truly understood. Did they even warn him? Did they tell him he should not be doing that? Why have they not put him out of his place already? I always knew that you were not allowed to talk about him bad and if you did I think you went to jail but I didn’t know that now they are actually killing people over there. That really needs to have something done about it. The president should not be president anymore.

You have made a good point, one that nobody seems to ever point out. Our media in the United States is biased on everything they tend to write about. IS the problem you are trying to cover in your letter really about the Civil War in Syria or is is about the biased media. I think you need to clear up your focus point, but no matter which way you take it you have a pressing issue. As for the media being biased it’s all about propaganda, and motivating the American people that something terrible is going on. The media truly only offers up one side, which is always the side that they believe in. They never offer any information about the other half of the story because they do not want to let people know that the other half could have beneficial statements to help swing opinion. As for the civil war, it is increasing in severity. Syria is one of the main countries in which we import our petroleum from, and with the war going on we have to watch out for our own interests. That being said we have to protect the oils wells, and with a war going on we have no idea what they might do to them. As for the problems it creates now, well gas prices have sky rocketed due to these effects because the Government always prepares for the worst. As of right now you have two solid issues, but i think you need to switch your focus to just one of them.

Your mother and I was probably one of the most confusing stories I ever read. A father telling a story about how his wife and himself discovered all these things about life is pretty weird. I think the whole story is a metaphor and its not really the father thats actually telling the story about his life to his son, rather then the earth speaking to us the people (the son) about how the world has changed from century to century. Its probably weird to understand but many stories are told in a secret message. Even songs these days have simplicial messages and hidden words. The story is just giving the reader something really deep to think about, which is very interesting considering the time and age we live in.

    Corrupt Powers

We live in a world that everything is a lie over lies over lies. Everybody lies we as individuals catch on and do something about that lie that is being told to our faces. When it comes to the most powerful people in the world we all know they lie but can we do anything about it? The question is maybe! If one person or a small group of people stand up to defend themselves by this enormous power they get grumbled up and thrown away with a blink of an eye. But if a large furious group of civilians get together and say enough is enough then it might just cause a disturbance in this absolute but not beatable power.

Governments are the strongest source of power that one nation holds. Here in America we have one of the best, strongest and stable governments that we could ever ask for. They look out for the people, understand the people, and give the people what they want. That’s because we as civilians choose our government. The major problem that we have to face as people that live in this country are gas prices. We have faced a dark recession a couple of years ago, not just in the US but also all over the world. This major problem was taking care of as soon as possible in American, that’s because our government did not want to cause a up rising from the people. The recitation would have brought forth riots, strikes and maybe a civil war. The American government took action for the best, unlike other countries were they’re still facing the horrible situations such as starvation, sicknesses, and poverty.

9,000 miles away in the Middle East many countries are facing democratic issue with the government and this superior power we call kingdom ship. Egypt one of the beloved countries in the world and most interesting places for tourist has been destroyed and crumbled all thanks to one man the president for 30 years, Hosni Mubarak. Muhammad Hosni El Sayed Mubarak is a former Egyptian politician and military commander. He served as the fourth President of Egypt from 1981 to 2011(.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hosni_Mubarak). Mubarak was born on 4 May 1928,in Kafr El-Meselha, Monufia Governorate, Egypt. He is married to Suzanne Mubarak, and has two sons: Alaa, and Gamal.( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hosni_Mubarak). This man alone caused a huge uprising in the Middle East and started the 2011 Egyptian revolution. The 2011–2012 Egyptian revolution took place following a popular uprising that began on Tuesday, 25 January 2011 and is still continuing as of February 2012. The uprising was mainly a campaign of non-violent civil resistance, which featured a series of demonstrations, marches, acts of civil disobedience, and labor strikes. Millions of protesters from a variety of socio-economic and religious backgrounds demanded the overthrow of the regime of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. Despite being predominantly peaceful in nature, the revolution was not without violent clashes between security forces and protesters, with at least 846 people killed and 6,000 injured. The uprising took place in Cairo, Alexandria, and in other cities in Egypt, following the Tunisian revolution that resulted in the overthrow of the long-time Tunisian president. On 11 February, following weeks of determined popular protest and pressure, Mubarak resigned from office (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_Egyptian_revolution). The reasons for the rebellion was because the Egyptian protesters were focused on legal and political issues including police brutality, state of emergency laws, lack of free elections and speech, uncontrollable corruption, and economic issues including high unemployment, food price inflation, and low minimum wages. The primary demands from protest organizers were the end of the Hosni Mubarak regime and the end of emergency law; freedom, justice, a responsive non-military government, and a say in the management of Egypt’s resources. Strikes by labor unions added to the pressure on government officials (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_Egyptian_revolution)

During the uprising the capital city of Cairo was described as “a war zone,” and the port city of Suez was the scene of frequent violent clashes. The government imposed a curfew that protesters defied and that the police and military did not enforce. The presence of Egypt’s Central Security Forces police, loyal to Mubarak, was gradually replaced by largely restrained military troops. In the absence of police, there was looting by gangs that opposition sources said were instigated by plainclothes police officers. In response, watch groups were organized by civilians to protect neighborhoods (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_Egyptian_revolution). The military of Egypt was loyal to their president and continued fariousious attacks to the civilians. They did not care how the riots ended or how many lives they took, the main focus was to protect Hosni Mubarak, but he did not get his way. In the revolt both of Mubarak’s sons Alaa, and Gamal Mubarak both died in brutal civilian combat.

On 11 February Vice President Omar Suleiman announced that Mubarak would be stepping down as president and turning power over to the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces. On 24 May, Mubarak was ordered to stand trial on charges of premeditated murder of peaceful protestors and, if convicted, could face the death penalty (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_Egyptian_revolution). Although Hosni Mubarak resigned, the protests and riots are continuing in Egypt. The Egyptians are concerned about how long the military will hold on to the beloved country of Egypt. Some are afraid that the military will rule the country until this crucial militia is over, when will that happen nobody knows yet. Its hard to grab a whole countries that had justed faced terror and trust another power with it. I would say this is at least going to last another couple of years until Egypt is back to normal. But will it ever be the same? I would say no. For example look what has happened to Iraq, it will never be the same and that’s the fate of Egypt. 80 percent of Iraq revenue came from the tourist to come see the pyramids. But know nobody is willing to take a vacation to a war zone. Because of this Egypt is stuck with no money flow, no government, and no rules. In February 2011, the media reported on the wealth of the Mubarak family. (ABC News) indicated that experts believed the personal wealth of Mubarak and his family to be between US$40 billion and $70 billion founded on military contracts made during his time as an air force officer. Britain’s Guardian newspaper also reported that Mubarak and his family might be worth up to $70 billion due to corruption, kickbacks and legitimate business activities. The money was said to be spread out in various bank accounts at home and abroad, including Switzerland and Britain, and also invested in foreign property. (En.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hosni Mubarak) All this money was to suppose to be for the people of Egypt but Hosni got greedy and kept the money for his own diastral scams. After the civil war ended Mubarak was thought to be afflicted by cancer. According to Egyptian media, Mubarak’s condition worsened after he went into exile in Sharm el-Sheikh. Mubarak was reportedly depressed, refused to take medications, and was slipping in and out of consciousness. According to the source, an unnamed Egyptian security official, “Mubarak wants to be left alone and die in his homeland”(en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hosni Mubarak). After his February 2011 resignation, Egypt’s ambassador to the United States Sameh Shoukry reported that his personal sources said Mubarak “is possibly in somewhat of bad health”, while several Egyptian and a Saudi Arabian newspapers, reported that Mubarak was near death and in a coma. On 12 April 2011, it was reported that Mubarak had been hospitalized after suffering a heart attack during questioning over possible corruption charges. (En.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hosni Mubarak). His health is what caused his greedy purposes and depressed over the loss of the country that he played for 30 years.
This uprising in Egypt caused many countries in the Middle East to rebel against their government. Libya, Yamen, and Syria all are facing the same down fall that Egypt did. All this is because the same reason that brought Egypt down, legal and political issues including police brutality, state of emergency laws, lack of free elections and speech, uncontrollable corruption, and economic issues including high unemployment, food price inflation, and low minimum wages. Libya is still fighting a civil war between the people and the military to over throw the king and take back their country. Libya’s king Muammar Muhammad Abu Minyar Gaddafi would not step down from his thrown and caused a terror to his nation. In February 2011, following revolutions in neighboring Egypt and Tunisia, protests against Gaddafi’s rule began. These escalated into an uprising that spread across the country, with the forces opposing Gaddafi establishing a government, based in Benghazi, named the National Transitional Council (NTC). This act led to a civil war, which precipitated military intervention by a NATO-led coalition to enforce a UN Security Council Resolution 1973 calling for a no-fly zone and protection of civilians in Libya. The assets of Gaddafi and his family were frozen, and both Interpol and the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants on 27 June for Gaddafi, his son Saif al-Islam, and his brother-in-law Abdullah Senussi, concerning crimes against humanity. Gaddafi and his forces lost the Battle of Tripoli, which is the capital of Libya in August and on 16 September 2011 the NTC, took Libya’s seat at the UN, replacing Gaddafi. He retained control over parts of Libya, most notably the city of Sirte, to which it was presumed that he had fled. Although Gaddafi’s forces initially held out in the battle for Sirte against NATO’s bombing attacks and the NTC’s advances, Gaddafi was captured alive in Sirte by members of the Libyan National Liberation Army after his convoy was attacked by NATO warplanes as Sirte fell on 20 October 2011. Gaddafi was then killed by NLA fighters. His 41-year leadership prior to the civil war made him the fourth-longest-serving non-royal leader since 1900, as well as the longest-serving Arab leader (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muammar_Gaddafi).

Italian companies had a strong foothold in Libya. Italy buys a quarter of Libya’s oil and 15% of its natural gas. The LIA owned significant shares in Italy’s Eni oil corporation, Fiat, UniCredit bank, and Finmeccanica. In January 2002 Gaddafi purchased a 7.5% share of Italian football club Juventus for US$21 million, through the Libyan Arab Foreign Investment Company. This followed a long-standing association with Italian industrialist Gianni Agnelli and car manufacturer Fiat.
On 25 February 2011 Britain’s Treasury set up a specialized unit to trace Gaddafi’s assets in Britain. Gaddafi allegedly worked for years with Swiss banks to launder international banking transactions. In November 2011, the Sunday Times identified property worth 100 billion in the UK that Gaddafi owned (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muammar_Gaddafi). Again Gaddafi got greedy like Mubarak and kept the money for his own selfish reasons, other then sharing it with his people and country like it was meant to be. 100 billion dollars to own is a lot for one man, he got what he deserved, killed by his own people.

“We live in a world that everything is a lie over lies over lies. Everybody lies we as individuals catch on and do something about that lie that is being told to our faces. When it comes to the most powerful people in the world we all know they lie but can we do anything about it?” I agree with you 100%. It’s hard to figure out who’s really telling us the truth these days. We can thank Nixon for ruining the presidents’ secret world of lies.

That’s interesting to think about that the government quickly tries to solve our problems because they don’t want a civil war or riots. I never thought of that with the gas prices. That people might rebel against the government for it. What sucks is I heard this summer is the price for unleaded gas is going to have a LOW of $4.50. Hopefully it’s not true…

AH! Rami! Don’t ever use Wikipedia as a source! Or at least say you did teehee… Wikipedia can be changed and altered by anyone so try your best not to use that as a source.

What you say about the tourism in Egypt is so true! I would love to see the pyramids but am I going to risk my life to see it? I don’t think so. It’s the same with the United States and the oil spill that happened in the Gulf of Mexico. It’s good they’re getting it cleaned up but no one wants to go lie on an oily beach.

Can you imagine living in a country with no rules or structure? That’s so scary because its leaving room for terrorist groups to take over.

You’re lacking a problem. Well, not really, that’s a huge problem. You’re not telling us about something that we alone can help fix. The object of the paper was to pick something you’re passionate about that we can help change. You didn’t address a problem exactly. You did put in your research to explain what is going on in Egypt but you missed the point of the paper. You also have to make this like a brochure. Look to your project sheet for reference. You had to separate your ideas and write about how we could change what topic we were passionate about. Unless you know another way, there is not much that we, as Americans, can do to help the Egyptian people without going to war. Unless you know another way and different organizations that help the Egyptian people, I would pick a new topic. You could pick something maybe about how we can donate to the Middle Eastern people who are being terrorized. You could even write about how we could change gas prices. You need to have something you can change. Get what I’m saying?

Your citations are supposed to more than just the URL of the website, and like I said before, never used Wikipedia as a source. To help you, you could look at the MLA guide from the library or go to easybib.com.

I agree that we cannot trust what anyone tells us. The way you said it just drew me in. I also liked how you worded these two sentences. ” If one person or a small group of people stand up to defend themselves by this enormous power they get grumbled up and thrown away with a blink of an eye. But if a large furious group of civilians get together and say enough is enough then it might just cause a disturbance in this absolute but not beatable power.” The way you worded it gave that sentence so much power. You were very informative on your writing too. You made it very clear on what was going on and who was involved. You gave a lot of background and present information which helped me understand what was going on. That is such a shame. I don’t really watch the news because of things like this I don’t want to know what’s going on. I know that may sound bad but it always upsets me that stuff like this goes on. I can’t believe they destroyed Egypt like that. I hate that some people are just so power hunger that they will put everyone in such misory and torture just so they could keep that power. If they were doing something good with it it wouldn’t be so bad for them but everyone wants the freedom of speech. That would be such a depressing thing if we were not able to have that. Reading this paper did let me realize again that I am gLad I live in the United States. I remember I used tlo think about it a lot that a lot of people dont know what they have here. I apprecaite that I am able to say what I want, go where I want, and not have to worry about a lot of things other people in other countries worry about. I don’t mean to sound like I don’t care I do but there really is nothing I can do. Gaddafi is a greedy guy that I agree did diserve to be killed by his own people. He was so greedy for keeping 100 billion dollars. He could have done so much into helping and still kept some money if he was greedy but he was just unhuman. To me that is evil. They had unemployment problems, he could have built something so people can have jobs. The reason they had high unemployment issues was probably because of him. It just blows my mind how some people could be so selfish and greedy. Those people honestly don’t deserve to live. I’m not being mean, it’s just they currupt people. Why should you be that selfish into keeping so much money when other people are in need of it, it isn’t even yours to keep. If other countries are like that too then the people should try to over the king. People are human beings, they shouldnt be treated like animals.
It was a good essay but the only thing I would say is that I noticed there was usage of wiki, I wouldn’t reccomend using wiki.

Your paper is really descriptive when it comes to letting us know the issues going on in Egypt. I was aware of the problem, but our daily news didn’t cover it to the fullest extent. I had no idea how long the uprising was going on for, or how long Mubarek had been in power. You by far know the idea of your the details, and have devoted yourself to collecting good research for your paper. The only thing is you are missing a few sections that would complete your paper. You have a good start, you just need to finish it. By finish I mean show us how we can get involved, or what organizations have joined to help solve this problem. You could tell us how the United States has been involved too, as well as what the current situation is to date. I agree with Shannon, when she says don’t use wikipedia as a source. Wikipedia is one of the most unreliable sources on the web only because it is good for quick information, but all of that information your getting could be debatably inaccurate. Your topic is a strong one because many of us don’t even know of the issues over seas, mainly because they don’t effect us. The fact is they do because we may be a powerful nation, but if everyone else is weak then so are we. It starts by going more in depth with the gas issues you had spoken about. Egypt is a major supplier to the United States, and if they have a radical leader such as Mubarek they tend to make poor decisions when it comes to everyone elses well being. For example, he could determine what he would want to sell his oil for, and not being in a Democratic system, could make the price per barrel highly outrageous. I really think if you finish where you left off then you will have a great paper. At some points it does get a little too factual, but after all it is a research paper. I also like how your paper can relate to mine as wll. It just goes to show that their are many people in this world who are dealing with inhumane issues, that we tend not to see. Our subjects are so much alike, and that had kept me reading it, but i noticed your subject is on more a global scale, and is being seen throughout the world. All I have to say is finish up, and keep us informaed on the things we don’t see or hear. I also appreciate the great feedback you left, its nice to know that my writing can make a positive impact on people with such a heartbreaking issue.

Who will survive activity was very interesting and fun, it made use think out side the box and it opened up a good conversation with the class. Sometimes we have to look beyond the material things people have and look at what they have to live for. For example Mrs. Hernadez is a prositiute and would not be worth saving here life for right? Wrong she has a three week child that is still probably nursing. If we kill Mrs. Hernadez then here baby will die from starvation. Im pretty sure when she gave birth to her baby that she would change her life style to be a role model for her daughter. Thats the kind of thinking we should think about out side the box. It was very brave of her to bring the child into this world knowing what she is and what she has done.

Dude why would you kill Ms. Hernandez, she is healthy she made some mistakes in the past in order to survive. Just kill who ever is old and sick. We need her in order for the world to repopulate.

Dave Eggers,What it means when a crowd in a faraway nation takes a soldier representing your own nation, shoots him, drags him from his vehicle and then mutilates him in the dust. Reading this i though to myself that the man was very scared reading about the soldier because he was probably from the same army that the other soldier came from. He knew something wasn’t right that day because he did something wrong that and nobody from the citizen of the community should know. He felt guilty about his past and then reading about the death of his comrade got to him. Was he wondering was he next on the list? Probably so. The man count even stand the fact that the soldier was not shot. It was a act of violence and torture that the people committed. And he was scared for his life. This man would probably turn him self over or commit suicide other then leaving in fear of his life and always watch behind his shoulders.

    Complications of life

Life is a very diffcult thing to except when were all grow up. Family, careers, happeines and so on thats what we manly choose to live for,but is that it? is this what we live for? Many say yes and I belive it. We all have to work hard to achive this but there are also consequensse and sacrifices we all have to give up to reach our goals. We all have different point of views toward life and we all choose to live it differently simply because thats who we are. Is life hard to live in? Yes it is thats because it takes time and knowledge to live as human beings. Everybody has to sacrifice something in there lives to be happy. Its either time to get money, self respect to be happy, friends over family,or life for power. No matter who you are or where you come from sacrifice is a must. I am willing to sacrifice my happineis for one word Family.

Family is the most important thing to me,parents, siblings, wife, kids. At the end of the day at the end of the year this is all I have to live for.We choose this kind of life style and now we have to live by it. We achieve careers to make our lives easier and buy the things that make us happy. Money isn’t everything in the world, plenty of people are rich and don’t know what to do with the money they have. But are they happy? we all know the answer to that question and thats simply no! Many people die without falling in love or die with no body on there side thats because they gave up there family, friends, and happiness to get to where there at right now. At the end of the day they would probably give up everything they have just to feel loved. I want to acheive my career to make my family happy and i will do anything to put a smile on my moms face and to make my father proud of the son he raised. I am not married I do not not have kids but when the time is right and I have those two major responsibility in my life. I would do anything to make my kids proud to call me thier father and to have my wife look at me like I am the best thing that has ever happend in her life. The love of a women and the joy of bringing life into this world is the greatest thing a man could ever ask for. But each person lives there life differently and we all have different views of living.

I have five beautiful sisters, the best mom ever, and the most respectful father a son would ask for. These seven people I would do anything to protect even if it means dying to keep them alive. Love is worth dying for and I can promise u this my death will not be in vein to protect those I live my life for! Life is something special and is a gift to see were it takes us, thats why we always say “never take life for granted”. It is an adventure no matter how we choose to explore it. People should not feel depressed or a need to commit suicide to give it up just like that, its to precious. We have to remember we are the ones in control of it and have the power to change anything we want no matter if its a good or bad thing. We have the power to go from negative to positive no matter the situation we are forced in. We have to over come what ever stands in our way for the sake of our loved ones, for the sake of our future. Life is worth it no matter how long it takes us to relize it no matter what we have to do life is a test and we all have to pass it. And in any means if passing my test means giving up my life for those I love I would do it in a heart beat.

Killing is a major sin no matter your religion or believes that is the only thing forbidden that we all have to live by. If we kill we get locked up those are the rules in our world. Even if its self defense thats still a major problem and will take years to finish up with the problems in our law. In war killing is like a walk in a park,no one is going to hold you accountable for defending yourself in the means of modern war. Many people in our world kill for money, drugs, jealousy,or just a means of filling there pitiful world with happiness such as serial killers and rapists. These days everybody is looking out for them self and in the means of survival there is always death. People that kill there children, wife’s,family, friends all have one thing in common, which is hatred. Hatred is what drives a person to do drastic things. If I would ever kill it will probably be on the war field just because thats what I have to do to survive. Kill or be killed those are the rules of the game.I would be honored to defend my country from anybody that tries to attack it just because its my home. Defending my country, defending my city were the people I care about live, I would be happy to protect them even kill someone to keep them safe. At the end of the day at the end of the year what do we have to live for? Is life really worth living for? Ask these questions to yourself and think of all the people your going to be letting down if theres no positive answers.

I agree. Life, for children and many teenagers, is a hard thing to accept. Many go off to college not realizing the things they will have to do for themselves once it is all over. They’ll realize how hard it is when their mom isn’t there to hold their hand through it all. You make a valid point when you state that a lot of people live for their careers. It’s sad that that’s all they have to live for. I like that you recognize that it does take sacrifice to live in this world. It’s not all fun and games, especially when it comes to your family. Many people couldn’t give a rip about love or family but you would sacrifice all the money you have or anything else just to feel loved by someone else. I can already tell you’d make a good father by how you respect your parents. To be a man who still works for his father’s respect is very admirable. To be a man and still want to make your mother happy is so respectable. It shows one day you will be a good father and even husband to your wife. I like that you said you would love for a woman to look at you one day like you’re the greatest thing that’s ever happened to her. That’s beautiful. True love is really hard to come by and I can tell you deserve it and would treat your wife like a queen. You have picked a great thing to live for. You have a great outlook on life. It’s fantastic that you believe you have the power to change things. There are many that don’t believe that they have no control in their life. I agree when you say killing is awful. It’s hard to say who or what you would kill for but I think you’re brave in saying you would defend our country. Yes, our country isn’t what it used to be and the American dream isn’t fulfilled too much anymore, but you’re still willing to put your life on the line for freedom. You’re willing to sacrifice it all for people you don’t even know.

To answer your questions, if you live life the right way it is definitely worth living. It’s hard to say what the “right” way is because the right way to someone can be raping people and to another it could be living to save lives. I feel that you should live for those who live for you or those who can’t live without you. It’s a waste of time to spend energy on those who just don’t care about you. I find more satisfaction in showing my love to those who show theirs to me. It’s worth it to spend the time finding those who care about you. You’re right when you say that the ones who will usually care about you the most are right at home with you. Hopefully everyone does have that family to go home to.

Rami, I’d go back over your spelling.

I do agree with you about the family, killing, and money part. I do believe that family is a big thing for alot of people. Everyone wants to protect the people they care about. I would hurt someone that would try to harm anyone in my family. That is a really good thing that you are willing to die for your family. Dont get me wrong I am not saying you should but that does show a little bit about who you are. It also shows that you do have a heart that is good. a person that cares about there family is truely a good person. Family doesnt just mean your biological father, mother, sister, or brother. Alot of people consider people they truely care about to be there family.I do agree that we are living or I believe that we are living to protect the people we love. We have to set a good example for them. We are here to let them feel that they are safe from anything and everything. The part about in every religon it is a sin for people to kill is also true in my eyes. I just dont know how we did get to the point where it was ok. I know people might disagree with me on this but I really dont care this is my opinion and I think that war is a waste. No matter what you think you are still killing poeple, but in society we all know that we are going to war to help people. We are still killing poeple too, but I dont want to get too much off the subject. Now the money part. Money means alot to people but people shouldnt really be that much as to kill for money. Most poeple dont realize it but its a piece of paper. I do want to say that you are right about people that are rich not really being happy, well at least thats what I believe too. Just picture this you have everything what more do you need. Nothing can really fulfill your need anymore. No matter what you buy its whatever because you bought it really easy. What I mean by that is when you work hard for something you get more excited to get it then when you already know you can get it easily.
I do want to say though that I did like your essay. You did good. You had repetition which kept me focused on what you were saying and talking about. You made everything straight forward, you care about your family and you are living for them. The only thing that I would say you would have to fix is some spelling, but other then that you were very clear and honest about what you think. You also had me thinking about some of the things you said which is also a great thing that is needed in writing. I learned that from a great teacher I had.

You have a good start to your paper, considering you cover all three of the topics. Family is your major priority in life and you clearly show it. I think it was good how you combined that you live for your family, you would die for your family, and kill for them all into the three topics. You have all the key components to making this a good paper. You kept the readers focus, and didn’t stray away from what you were trying to say, but at the same time I would like to see you hint the reader rather then just throw it at them straight forward. Your intentions for this paper were clearly defined right from the get go. I only have a few suggestions for you with trying to help you with the revision process. First off, I would like to see just a little more detail when it comes to talking about your family. You could add something like why they are special to you, or what reminds you of them. Also, it may just help if you talk about another topic inside of your paper. I know you love your family, and that is very respectful and honorable, but it starts to make the reader feel like they are reading the same paragraph over and over again. Other then that I would review your spelling a few times, there are some key errors that draw attention away from the fact that you have a well written paper. You have the core components to a good paper, I believe you just need to go back and fix some small things and add some additional information. I also agree with you that family is your biggest priority in life because mine is too. I think that some of us lose sight of who we are and forget about ourselves and the ones we care about. When you talk about living life the right way, well living it their way is the right way. For some people it could be beneficial, and for others it could not because so many of us have different view points of how we live our lives. For example, I believe that living it the right way is to gain the fullest and highest quality out of life before you die. For somebody else, their right way could mean that they want to harm others, or steal from others. I believe you could go back and clear cut what your view point of living life the right way is. The other thing that you did a really good job on was when you talked about your true love for your wife. It allowed me to view you as a person and begin to open my eyes as to what kind of character you are. I think you should leave that paragraph in their because it sends a strong message to your reader. Again, I would just add a little more detail, and review your spelling and your paper would shape up rather nicely.

Ecological literacy to my understanding is how we as individuals treat the atmosphere around us like plants, our oceans and seas, human beings, animals, and what we do to respect all that. We are human beings we cant help our ways. We don’t care for none livings things such as the air we breath but then pullout from our cars, the trees that we tare down to make fine furniture,or the animals we kill just to say we have a nice coat on. War is a major down fault in our existence, but without war there would be no rules set,no political believes,no order in our ecological state of mind. Lots of wars were nonsence and i believe could have been solved in a better way and could have helped make the earth healthier then it is now. Stubborn is the best word to describe our existence as man kind and we are paying the consciousness as we speak. This is the whole worlds life style and we are all guilty of not being one hundred percent dedicated to ecological literacy. But a good way to become ecological literate is to simply feel that the world is our home and we need to pay more attention to it. We keep our homes clean and safe, why can’t we start doing that to our earth? I think every human thats wants to make a difference can achieve it by dedicating a couple hours a week to sign up with organizations that are founded to keep ecological literacy alive. I am not ecological literate, I am as guilty as anybody else.To make up for my false doing i will try my hardest to participate in activities that can make me ecological fit! The professor mentioned the service opportunities in our last class,i believe that thats a great why to start and i will be participating in that up coming service.

I think the grading contract is fair,if a student does all his work and contributes to splatter weekly they should not have a reason to fail.
